How Do GPS Trackers Work? A Beginner’s Guide Reading Vehicle GPS Tracker Installation Guide | Sitecomm 4 minutes

Installing a GPS tracker helps you monitor your vehicle’s location. For a hardwired tracker, we recommend professional installation by a qualified auto electrician to help ensure safe wiring, secure mounting and reliable operation.

What does GPS tracker installation involve?

A hardwired installation involves choosing a suitable mounting location, routing and securing cables, and connecting the tracker to your vehicle’s electrical system according to the instructions supplied with your model.

Sitecomm GPS trackers include a SIM card and have built-in antennas, so there’s no need to source a separate SIM or install an external antenna. The tracker still needs to be positioned correctly for reliable reception.

Setup also includes configuring access to your tracking app or web portal and checking that the device powers up and reports its location correctly.

GPS tracker wiring connections

The basic wiring connections for our trackers are:

  • Red wire: Positive power supply.
  • White wire: Ignition.
  • Black wire: Ground.

These colours are a connection overview, not a complete installation guide. Your installer should follow the instructions for your specific tracker model and confirm the correct supply voltage, fuse requirements and vehicle connection points before wiring the device.

Why choose professional installation?

A qualified auto electrician can help avoid wiring mistakes and get your tracker set up correctly from the start.

Electrical safety

Correct power connections, grounding and circuit protection help reduce the risk of electrical faults or damage to your vehicle.

Secure mounting and cable routing

Your tracker and its wiring should be secured away from moving parts, heat sources and vehicle safety systems.

Reliable tracking performance

Even with built-in antennas, tracker placement matters. A professional installer can follow the manufacturer’s mounting guidance and test reception before completing the job.

Time and expertise

An experienced technician can assess your vehicle’s electrical system, make suitable connections and test the installation, helping you avoid unnecessary troubleshooting.

Optional remote vehicle shutdown

Sitecomm also offers remote vehicle shutdown options. Ask us about compatibility with your vehicle and the additional installation requirements.

This feature requires professional installation and must only be used when the vehicle is safely stationary. Never attempt to shut down a moving vehicle. Your installer should explain how the system operates and any safety restrictions before use.

Lifetime warranty

Sitecomm GPS trackers come with a lifetime warranty. For hardwired models, we recommend professional installation to help ensure safe wiring and reliable operation.

Can you install a GPS tracker yourself?

Always check the instructions supplied with your device before starting.

Hardwired trackers connect directly to your vehicle’s electrical system. If you’re not experienced with vehicle electrical work, use a qualified auto electrician rather than attempting the wiring yourself. Optional remote shutdown equipment should also be professionally installed.

How to arrange professional installation

Contact a reputable auto electrician or vehicle electronics specialist in your area. Provide your vehicle’s make, model and year, along with your Sitecomm tracker model and installation instructions.

If you want the optional remote shutdown feature, discuss this before booking so the installer can assess compatibility and the work required.

Ask for a quote and an estimated installation time, as these will depend on your vehicle and the features being installed.

Before collecting your vehicle, ask the installer to demonstrate that the tracker is online and that you can view its location in your tracking app or web portal.
